The life of Ben Davis had been full of struggles and challenges, which he apparently could not cope with, and that caused his mental condition. Tom Pelphrey acted amazingly in Ozark as the character.

Viewers got emotionally attached to him and could not accept his unfortunate fate. It made them disheartened and furious. Ben has a cult following for himself.

I had briefly mentioned in my previous blog that his brilliant performance created a possibility of a spin-off. This spin-off can either be a series or a movie. However, a web series would be the better choice, as it could focus on the details which otherwise may not be possible.

The spin-off must focus on his childhood, adolescence, and middle-age phases of life and the event that caused him bipolar disorder.

The Cause and The Story

Although the exact cause of the disorder is unknown, it usually occurs in those, with a first-degree relative, with the condition. This condition makes physical changes in the brain. The significance of the change is unknown but helps narrow down the cause. Even alcohol or drug abuse, or some other traumatic event such as the death of someone close, can cause this disorder.

The story could show the cause to be his abusive parents, the guilt of the death of a known because of him, or simply because he got involved in drugs. Whatsoever the reason may be, it should have a social message. However, not at the cost of a good story.

I hope that the makers read this blog and come up with a story. Fans are eagerly waiting for some news!

Julia Garner’s performance as Ruth Langmore

What sets Ozark apart from other crime dramas is its outstanding cast. The show boasts an exceptional lineup of actors who have delivered some of the best performances of their careers. Her only goal is to have a better life for Langmores. And to achieve that, she has been a loyalist to Marty Byrde.

Ruth’s relationship with her father

At first, viewers may have perceived Ruth Langmore (portrayed by Julia Garner) as a low-life individual who would eventually meet her demise at the hands of the cartel due to her excessive greed. However, as the series progressed, it was revealed that her desire for wealth and power stemmed from an extreme fear of her physically abusive father, Cade Langmore (portrayed by Trevor Long). Ruth’s body language conveyed her fear and distress whenever she interacted with her father, especially when he was released from prison on parole. Although sexual abuse was hinted at, it was later revealed that Cade was physically assaultive and had a quick temper.

Ruth’s body language displayed signs of fear and distress when she interacted with her father, especially during their meeting in prison. She was similarly uncomfortable when Cade returned from jail on parole, as he had previously assaulted her. His short temper, criminal tendencies, and resistance to positive change in the lives of the Langmores caused Ruth extreme distress.

Even though Cade had been a terrible individual, his love for Ruth could be seen when he was ready to fight the cartel, all alone. In another incident, he killed an FBI agent in rage when the latter said inappropriately about his daughter. Cade had been an important character, as his presence, actions, and thoughts greatly affected Ruth.

Her love for her father became evident when she came to see his corpse. However, she took Marty as a father figure, as the former lacked compassion as a human being. In one of the episodes in season three, she even compared herself with his daughter Charlotte Byrde. To be part of a regular happy family, she looked upon Byrdes.

It seems that she was looking forward to the betterment of Langmores. But her father shattered her belief by telling her that they were Langmores and their misery shall never change, as that was their fate and destiny. She hoped Marty would help.

Ruth’s loyalty toward Marty

Speaking of the betterment of Langmores, she made the difficult decision of killing her uncles to protect Marty. She knew that if Marty survived, he might pay her for her loyalties, eventually benefiting her and her cousins.

But her integrity never got her anything other than pain. She was brutally tortured for hours by the cartel, lost her family members, and got savagely assaulted by Frank Jr. Cosgrove, the son of the head of the Kansas City Mob. And above all, she lost the love of her life, Ben. She now believes that while she made extreme sacrifices for Marty, he, on the other hand, never took a stand for her, especially in saving Ben.

The change and its repercussions

The season three finale brings a change in the character of Ruth (Julia Garner) when she joins hands with Darlene Snell. Her character has evolved. However, her beliefs are different than the core reality. Marty did all that he could do. He even tried saving Ben. Her hate and anger are justified. But from her perspective, she is far from the whole truth.

So, we may first witness a revolt from her that may result in her death by the cartel. The other result could be her realization of the truth and coming back to support the Byrdes. Who knows, probably Ben never died.

To speculate with an optimistic perspective, by the finale of Ozark, we may see her as the kingpin running the cartel or may join Byrdes as a family, living a beautiful life. But as Marty says, “That’s a bunch of crap. Things happen because human beings make decisions, they commit acts, and that makes things happen. And it creates a snowball effect with the, you know, their world around them, causes other people to make decisions”.

In conclusion, Ozark is a show that stands out not only for its captivating plotline and exceptional cast but also for the outstanding performance of Julia Garner. Her portrayal of Ruth Langmore is one of the most memorable and complex characters in recent television history. With the final season on the horizon, it’s clear that Garner’s work in Ozark will continue to be a defining moment in her career.

The character gradually evolves into becoming the pivot of the season. Viewers by the season finale got emotionally connected.

One feels anger and pity at the same time witnessing his unexpected and uncontrolled reactions. He complicated even simple things, always putting himself into a condition from which there was no escape.

These serious unintentional complications arose due to his unfortunate mental condition.

Viewers watched the complete season with the hope that Wendy and Marty may be able to help him.

A complex character, natural performance

Tom Pelphrey got the character into himself so well that it was unimaginable to think of someone else in the role.

Although all the other actors performed well, Tom stole the show. Moreover, the complexity of the character, bringing abrupt change in his behavior, seemed to come naturally to him.

It’s not just the actor but the writer and director too who put life into the character. Just like actors, they too are artists. Without them and their vision, outstanding actors also fail.

Award nominations

Tom got nominated twice for the best supporting actor award. The first was in a drama series for the Critics’ Choice Television Awards. The second was for series, miniseries, or television films for Satellite Award.

He also got nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series for the role.

However, no nomination for Emma Awards disheartened his fans.

Possible spin-off

The character created a possibility of a spin-off series based on the life of Ben Davis. We hope the makers think it over and make another exciting series that would show his life story and struggles.

Outer Range is a new upcoming show where Tom Pelphrey will be playing the role of Perry Abbott. There are no details about the character, and there has been no confirmation on the release date either. The premier will be available on Prime Video, though.
