The Byrdes Could Do Nothing!

Some might argue that Byrdes could have done nothing to save her. She killed Javi, and the cartel would have eventually found that out sooner or later. Ruth had signed her death warrant the day she killed him.

Wendy and Marty had warned her about the consequences once she killed Javi. But Ruth was obsessed with killing him. 

They hid the deaths of Javi and Nelson from Camila and Omar, respectively. They did their best to protect Ruth.

Byrdes could never jeopardize their freedom. After all, they had sacrificed; saving Ruth would have spoiled everything. Killing Camila would have hurt their last deal with Camila and the FBI. It was not worth taking the risk.

What could have been done?

The question is, would Marty have done the same had Ruth been his daughter? Had she been Charlotte? No. The Byrdes would have killed Camila instead and wouldn’t have thought about the FBI, the cartel, or the deal.

The cops had killed Omar, and if Byrdes had killed Camila and her associates at the party, the FBI wouldn’t have any issues allowing Marty to run the cartel. But Byrdes didn’t want to take any further risk.

On the other hand, Ruth had sacrificed her whole family for Byrdes. Especially Marty. Surprisingly, Wendy seemed more concerned about her than Marty in the last episode. 

The possible reason was that Ruth brought her children back to her, and she gained Wendy’s trust and respect.

Ruth’s anger towards Javi

Ruth’s anger and hatred towards Javi were genuine. Javi was a self-centered, egoistic fool who always pulled the trigger at the very first opportunity. Omar had even slapped him in front of all his subordinates.

The only reason he killed Wyatt was that he was sitting next to Darlene.  

Conclusion

The killing of Ruth had been the second saddest death in Ozark, and Ben’s is the most. Though she was going through a lot of mental trauma due to her cousin Wyatt’s death, she was still strong.

Ruth Langmore was a beautiful character played brilliantly by Julia Garner. Her death and Byrdes’s freedom ended this incredible show.

After seeing Breaking Bad, I almost lost interest in other series. It took me quite a while to accept any.

Breaking Bad was that good. The only series that I liked after watching it was Game of Thrones. Again GOT was a different type of show featuring dragons, demons, and magic but, there was none like Breaking Bad.

Then there were other series that I enjoyed watching. I have listed a few in my earlier blog. The link is at the bottom of the page.

I am also making sure that this doesn’t turn into a spoiler. However, I will be discussing certain characters and events from the show.

After watching the Korean series Squid Game and Alice In Borderland, I developed an interest in this segment. My Netflix too started suggesting me other Korean dramas. So, I decided to watch Extracurricular.

About the series

Extracurricular is a South Korean show released on Netflix on April 29, 2020. It has one season with ten episodes. It can also be considered a miniseries. However, by looking at the season-ending, it seems that there should be further seasons.

As per Wikipedia, “Extracurricular was the ninth most-watched South Korean series on Netflix in 2020”. Looking at that rating, many must have seen the show.

The show is like Breaking Bad in many ways.

Synopsis

It is a story about a teenage boy abandoned by his parents, who masterminds a prostitution business. As per him, he provides security to the sex workers who work for his organization. 

There are a lot of similarities between Breaking Bad and Extracurricular. Let us look at some.

The Story

The story itself has a lot of similarities. Mr. Walter White of Breaking Bad has cancer and has only a few months to live. 

He has a respectable job as a chemistry teacher and works part-time at a car service center, earning enough to sustain his family. Still, he seems insecure about their future after him.

He plans to start an illegal Meth manufacturing and selling business to earn an enormous amount of money. That’s the only way he could get a lot of money in a short time.

Oh Ji-soo of Extracurricular is a child abandoned by his parents. Father has a filthy habit of gambling. His mother, tired of his father’s addiction, leaves both of them.

Ji-soo needs a lot of money to complete his schooling and graduation. And later to start a life as a regular job-going person. He can’t earn that much just by doing a part-time job.

The Characters

While watching Extracurricular, I could easily relate to a lot of characters from Breaking Bad. I am listing a few here.

Oh Ji-soo and Walter White

Both the characters are almost the same. They both are geniuses, cunning, and masterminds whom no one could ever imagine as a villain. They both are protagonists and antagonists at the same time. And that’s quite interesting.

Also, as mentioned earlier, both have their specific necessities to start the illegitimate business.

Oh Ji-soo and Gustavo “Gus” Fring

The character also has strong similarities with Gustavo Fring. Both live dual lives and both have exceptional management skills.

For the world, Gus runs Los Pollos Hermanos, a fast-food chain. But in the underworld, he runs an empire of the meth business.

Ji-soo for the world is a simple, down to Earth nerd who is never involved in any unlawful activities. But in reality, he is also a pimp known by the name Uncle.

They both meticulously manage their business without jeopardizing their true identity. It is only when someone else involves due to which things get bad. I do not wish to disclose the details as that may ruin your show.

Mr. Lee and Mike Ehrmantraut

The two are a lot alike. Both are loyal right-hand hitmen whom their respective bosses trust.

Mike is a retired policeman who works for Gus Fring. Lee is a former US Army soldier who uses his skills to protect the Uncle and the prostitutes.

Brilliance

Let us look at other things that make the show a must-watch.

The Hidden Message

After every end of the episode, there is a social message displayed. It says that in case a child needs help, one must seek help from a trusted adult. There are also help numbers provided.

Children, especially teenagers, most of the time use the wrong methods to solve their problems. It is often due to immaturity, inexperience, and hormonal changes at that age.

This story and the message can help a child understand the consequences of their irreparable actions. They should seek help instead of acting on their own.

Bae Gyu-ri is another main character of the series with wealthy parents. They are overly concerned about their social status. This behavior of her parents abets her to attempt suicide.

There are times when one could feel that her mother probably has obsessive-compulsive disorder. 

The story also has a message for those parents who do not prioritize their children’s future over their addictions and egos.

Had the parents of Ji-soo did not leave him alone and the parents of Bae Gyu-ri given her time and importance, they would not have ventured into the dirty world.

Acting and Direction

A great story without great acting and direction cannot craft into a masterpiece. We have seen that in Breaking Bad. It is a masterpiece because everyone gave their best into it.

The same goes here. Kim Jin-min directed the show brilliantly.

Actors Kim Dong-hee as Oh Ji-soo, Park Ju-hyun as Bae Gyu-ri, Jung Da-bin as Seo Min-hee, Nam Yoon-su as Kwak Ki-tae, Choi Min-soo as Lee Wang-chul, Park Hyuk-kwon as Cho Jin-woo, and Kim Yeo-jin as Lee Hae-gyoung performed exceptionally well.

So, if you want to watch a show that is more like Breaking Bad or a must-watch Korean show, I’d suggest Extracurricular. There is a lot more that I cannot mention here in a blog.

Julia Garner’s performance as Ruth Langmore

What sets Ozark apart from other crime dramas is its outstanding cast. The show boasts an exceptional lineup of actors who have delivered some of the best performances of their careers. From Jason Bateman’s portrayal of the show’s lead character, Marty Byrde, to Laura Linney’s masterful performance as his wife, Wendy, the show is full of standout performances. But it is Julia Garner who truly steals the show.

Tom Pelphrey’s performance as Ben Davis had been flawless in Ozark. But, Ruth Langmore, a character brilliantly portrayed by Julia Garner, has been the best in Ozark. Julia Garner is another actor in the series who performed brilliantly apart from Tom Pelphrey.

Garner’s performance as Ruth Langmore is nothing short of brilliant. She brings a level of complexity to the character that makes her one of the most intriguing characters on the show. Ruth is a tough, street-smart young woman who is forced to work with the Byrde family after they take over her family’s criminal enterprises. Garner’s portrayal of Ruth captures both her vulnerability and her strength, making her a character that audiences can’t help but root for.

Performance along with other actors

She is one individual who has shown immense strength to stand along with Byrdes. Unlike Byrdes, whose primary objective is to stay alive, hers is to earn a respectable job with a good salary. Her only goal is to have a better life for Langmores. And to achieve that, she has been a loyalist to Marty Byrde.

Ruth’s relationship with her father

At first, viewers may have perceived Ruth Langmore (portrayed by Julia Garner) as a low-life individual who would eventually meet her demise at the hands of the cartel due to her excessive greed. However, as the series progressed, it was revealed that her desire for wealth and power stemmed from an extreme fear of her physically abusive father, Cade Langmore (portrayed by Trevor Long). Ruth’s body language conveyed her fear and distress whenever she interacted with her father, especially when he was released from prison on parole. Although sexual abuse was hinted at, it was later revealed that Cade was physically assaultive and had a quick temper.

Ruth’s body language displayed signs of fear and distress when she interacted with her father, especially during their meeting in prison. She was similarly uncomfortable when Cade returned from jail on parole, as he had previously assaulted her. His short temper, criminal tendencies, and resistance to positive change in the lives of the Langmores caused Ruth extreme distress.

Even though Cade had been a terrible individual, his love for Ruth could be seen when he was ready to fight the cartel, all alone. In another incident, he killed an FBI agent in rage when the latter said inappropriately about his daughter. Cade had been an important character, as his presence, actions, and thoughts greatly affected Ruth.

Her love for her father became evident when she came to see his corpse. However, she took Marty as a father figure, as the former lacked compassion as a human being. In one of the episodes in season three, she even compared herself with his daughter Charlotte Byrde. To be part of a regular happy family, she looked upon Byrdes.

It seems that she was looking forward to the betterment of Langmores. But her father shattered her belief by telling her that they were Langmores and their misery shall never change, as that was their fate and destiny. She hoped Marty would help.

Ruth’s loyalty toward Marty

Speaking of the betterment of Langmores, she made the difficult decision of killing her uncles to protect Marty. She knew that if Marty survived, he might pay her for her loyalties, eventually benefiting her and her cousins.

But her integrity never got her anything other than pain. She was brutally tortured for hours by the cartel, lost her family members, and got savagely assaulted by Frank Jr. Cosgrove, the son of the head of the Kansas City Mob. And above all, she lost the love of her life, Ben. She now believes that while she made extreme sacrifices for Marty, he, on the other hand, never took a stand for her, especially in saving Ben.

The change and its repercussions

The season three finale brings a change in the character of Ruth (Julia Garner) when she joins hands with Darlene Snell. Her character has evolved. However, her beliefs are different than the core reality. Marty did all that he could do. He even tried saving Ben. Her hate and anger are justified. But from her perspective, she is far from the whole truth.

So, we may first witness a revolt from her that may result in her death by the cartel. The other result could be her realization of the truth and coming back to support the Byrdes. Who knows, probably Ben never died.

To speculate with an optimistic perspective, by the finale of Ozark, we may see her as the kingpin running the cartel or may join Byrdes as a family, living a beautiful life. But as Marty says, “That’s a bunch of crap. Things happen because human beings make decisions, they commit acts, and that makes things happen. And it creates a snowball effect with the, you know, their world around them, causes other people to make decisions”.

In conclusion, Ozark is a show that stands out not only for its captivating plotline and exceptional cast but also for the outstanding performance of Julia Garner. Her portrayal of Ruth Langmore is one of the most memorable and complex characters in recent television history. With the final season on the horizon, it’s clear that Garner’s work in Ozark will continue to be a defining moment in her career.

Usually, AI learns from past data, predicts the future, and acts accordingly.

What do you think AI will do in the future after analysing our historical data? What exactly have we been doing all this time?

Do you know most of our actions are getting documented and analysed, as simple as our shopping, touring and browsing habits?

Even the good and evil deeds of human ancestors in the past. These historical and current data are widely available on the internet, and most are accessible to everyone, even to AI.

Will it not analyse all this information if it can?

The analysis of humans destroying the ‘only’ world with wars, hate, civil rights violations, and crime to satisfy their ego and greed, and human’s intolerance towards other human being and their beliefs, what will AI do?

In the story, he rises to power from nothing. Thomas Shelby happens to be the most focused, cunning, and strong-willed man. He alone, because of his brilliant mind and strategies, can save the family from its enemies.

His aunt Polly Gray is his right hand. Other trusted council members are his brothers Arthur, John, and Finn Shelby, and his sister Ada Thorne.

While serving in the British Army, Sargent Major Thomas Shelby, Arthur and John were awarded medals for their bravery; now, they are veterans.

The Bad Copper

Sam Neill as Ulster Protestant Irish police Inspector, Chester Campbell. Being a murderer, rapist, and blackmailer makes him one of those characters in the series that one would hate to his guts.

He is sent to Small Heath Birmingham from Belfast for the investigation of a missing consignment of weapons.

He is later promoted to Major, as he succeeds in the mission.

A Brilliant Show

Viewers hate Major Campbell because of the sheer brilliance shown by Sam Neill through his acting skills. He completely understood the character and thus portrayed him well. We have seen him in many other movies but, Jurassic Park was at another level.

Other main characters of the show are introduced in the later seasons. Main leads like Michael Gray, Alfred “Alfie” Solomons, Aberama Gold, Luca Changretta, and Linda Shelby are just a few.

All the actors in the series performed exceptionally well. It would be unfair to rate one higher than the other. The intensity of their feelings of pain, suffering, happiness, anger, rage, and loneliness depicts in their eyes. Their body language approves their state of mind, and because of that viewer gets emotionally attached to the characters.

Every character in the series has a detailed explanation about its origin; that does not break the story. On the contrary, these stories make the show more interesting. It is an example of excellent story writing, screenplay, casting, and direction.
